Mary Dee Carter

Mary Dee (Martin, Witty) Carter was born on February 6, 1919 to the late Clarence and Lizzie Weaver Martin. In 1938, Mary Dee married Bernice Bryant Witty. Together they were superintendents of the Hillcrest Home/County Farm from 1949 until his death in 1969. In 1975, she married William Glenroy Carter who also preceded her in death. Mary Dee had retired from Park Avenue Pharmacy/Hatchett Home medical in 2011. She was a Kentucky Colonel and an avid UK basketball fan. Mary Dee was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She passed away at Barren County Nursing and Rehab Center on April 23, 2020 at 101 years of age.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by 8 brothers: Lee, Paul, Wilson, Herbert, Allen, David, Richard, and Billy Joe Martin, as well as 3 sisters: Shirley Ann Norman, Margie Ward, and Nadine Morgan, and by one stepdaughter, Anna Mary Carter.
Mrs. Carter is survived by one daughter, Lillian Paulette (Tony) Wasylycia, Glasgow, Kentucky; one stepdaughter, Glenda (Rodney) Brown, Gatesville, Texas; and two stepsons: Edwin (Debbie) Carter of Kennesaw, Georgia and Tony (Darlene) Carter of Lehigh Acres, Florida; two grandsons: David Bryant (Michelle) Woodcock, Austin, Kentucky and Scott Andrew (Jonita) Woodcock, Glasgow; three step-granddaughters and four step-grandsons; six great-grandchildren: Andrew Bryant (Ashley) Woodcock, Austin Lee and Aiden Alexander Woodcock, Stacie Elizebeth, Meridith Grace and Kenneth Fayeth Woodcock; nine step great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter Rowan Grace Troutt; one sister: Etta Calvert, Glasgow; one brother: Orby (Nellie) Martin, Glasgow; several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Friends will be able to view the service later at www.facebook.com/hatchersaddler.

Paulette, our sincere condolences. Your mom was one of a kind and we both have very fond memories of her. I’m not sure Tommy remembered her babysitting for him when he was little but he sure remembers her in more recent years. And let’s face it, he’s the reason you’re here! It was the highlight of his week when he visited her on her hundredth birthday. My memories stem from us being in school together and all the time that I spent with you at the county farm. Such fond memories of climbing out the window onto the flat roof, climbing the trees on the hill and looking into the old buildings, talking with Big Bertha (I think that was her name) and Granny while they cooked in the kitchen for the residents. Such good memories to last a lifetime. You were so fortunate to have your mom for so long. Remember the good times.

So many special memories of my Aunt Mary Dee! She was so full of love, and life. She was there the day my first daughter was born, and although we didn’t live close, I loved every chance I had to spend time with her. She was so kind, so spunky, and so funny!! I’m so sad I didn’t get to see her one more time. Blessings to you Paulette, and all the children and grandchildren. I love you all.
Paulette, David,Scott., and your precious spouses, I have such beautiful memories sitting next to Mary Dee at the ballgames as she was cheering for her grandsons. Sure she did the same for their kids , also. She most definitely loved her family with all her heart and soul. No doubt, she is really rejoicing with her Lord and loved ones in heaven. A true lady in this world and has left many memories for all left here. God Bless you all. So honored to know you all! ????????
It’s hard to put into words how precious Mrs. Mary Dee is to me. So many laughs and hugs and adventures have passed between us over 37 years. She is a jewel land my life has clearly been enriched by knowing her. Much love to you Paulette and the rest of the family. Dr karen
So many memories of Mary Dee during my years growing up and as a member of Bethel Methodist. My parents and grandparents thought so much of her and her family. Thoughts and prayers for Paulette and family. What a long rich life she had.

Paulette, I can’t say enough about your mom. Such a precious soul! Loved her so much. Of course she didn’t remember me last time I saw her but I remember all those times when I’d see her at the drugstore and many fond memories of her at the county farm!! Bettie and I express our deepest condolences to Mary Dee’s Family. We had known her since 1971. She was so good to our children at Ely Drugs.
