Vernon Payne

          Vernon Edward Payne, 59, Horse Cave, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 29, 2024 at his residence.  A native of Taylor County, he was the son of the late James Walter “Shorty” Payne and Deatte Larue Wilcox Payne.

          Vernon was a former manager of an Exxon market and formerly a member of the Merchant Marines having served in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  In recent years he was an interior designer.  He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Glasgow.

          Survivors include his partner and long-time companion Jose Cabrero; two sisters: Marlene Robin and Shirley Nolen; a special cousin Gail Cave; several nieces and nephews.

          In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother James “Jimmy” Payne, and two sisters: Mary Kay Clark and Margaret Payne Elie.

          The family honored Vernon’s wishes to be cremated.  A celebration of his life will be held at a future date.  Arrangements entrusted to Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.
