James Harkey, Jr.

James Cleason Harkey, Jr., died Friday, July 24, 2009 at his residence. He was born October 24, 1924 in Havana, Arkansas and lived in Oxnard, California for many years. Mr. Harkey moved to Glasgow after retiring as a machinist for Raytheon Corporation. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was at the landing at Normandy. He was a medic and truck driver and one of the first to enter the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau, Germany. His memories of the war marked the rest of his life.

He is survived by one son: James C. Harkey, III of Oxnard, California; one sister: Mary Russell of Glasgow; one brother-in-law: Orlan Thomas of Russellville, Arkansas; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents James C. Harkey, Sr. and Iola Love Harkey; two wives: Metta Vee Harkey and Edna Harkey.

He wished to be cremated and there will be no services. Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

    Mr. Harkey was a long-time customer when he purchased diesel from me all those years at Ashland Oil and he remained a good friend who visited often after I became City Clerk and moved to City Hall. His friendship and presence will truly be missed.
