James H. Newberry, 82, son of the late Thomas Pemberton Newberry and Willie Winlock Newberry of Hiseville, died on February 12, 2001 at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital.

Mr. Newberry served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After leaving the army, he farmed with his brothers and later he worked with Kentucky Farm Bureau.

A graduate of Western Kentucky University, Mr. Newberry was a member of a family of educators, all of whom taught at some time in their careers. He was a one-room school teacher before entering WWII and after the war, he taught Veterans’ Agriculture Classes. He served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1958 through 1959 and in the Kentucky State Senate from 1964 through 1967.

He was a member of the Hiseville Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years before being named Deacon Emeritus. He was a former member and vice chairman of the Glasgow-Barren County City-County Planning Commission, a former director of the Hiseville Deposit Bank (now a part of Area Banks) and a director of Newberry Brothers, Inc., a family farm operation.

Survivors include his wife, the former Carrie Walker, a native of Columbia, Ky.; two sons, James H. Newberry, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl Ann of Lexington, Steven W. Newberry and his wife, Vickie of Hiseville; two grandsons, Walker Newberry of Hiseville and Drew Newberry of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Emily Newberry of Hiseville; two nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank Newberry and Maxie Newberry of Hiseville, Leslie Newberry of Russellville and Tom Newberry of Arizona; and four sisters, Mary Jo Thomason of Hiseville, Ruth Saunders of Cave City-Hiseville, Mattie Vernon Newberry and Caroline Newberry of Hiseville.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Hiseville Cemetery. Friends may call after 12 noon Wednesday at the funeral home.
