Velma Ruth Bush, 92, Glasgow, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital after a sudden illness

Velma was born and raised in the Oil City community of Barren County.  Her family home was in the location where the runway of the Glasgow Airport is now located. She moved into Glasgow when she was 19 years old, initially working at Cherry’s Coffee Shop. A frequent customer was Eugene Abell, manager of Lerman’s Department Store. He noticed the friendly, smiling waitress and persuaded her to work for him which she did for 13 years. It was while at Lerman’s she was noticed by Glenn C. “Sog” Bush of Tracy who asked a friend for an introduction. They married in 1949.  They moved to the Austin Tracy community in 1955, where they lived until 1997 when they returned to Glasgow.

Velma was a member of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church but also attended Tracy United Methodist Church. She a 60 year member of the Tracy Homemakers,  a member of the Samson-ites and Glasgow Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn and her son, Ricky Bush, her parents John Burl Martin and Vassie Ruth Jackman Martin, two brothers Leo Martin and Robert Martin and a sister, Lorene Harlow.

Velma is survived by her daughter, Brenda Bush of Glasgow, her grand dogs Austin and Tracy, 2 brothers Eugene Martin and Gilbert (Norma) Martin  of Glasgow, 4 sisters, Beatrice Glass, Mary Landrum, Maxine (G.A.) Hawkins, all of Glasgow and Betty Esters, of Cave City, sisters-in-law, June Martin, Pat Martin and Mary Bush of Glasgow and Reba Bush of Franklin, a brother-in-law Joe Harlow of Glasgow and her caregivers Kim Bunch, Scarlett Edmunds and Glenda Reece.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

    Brenda…I send you my sympathy from far-away Rome, New York.
    I never had the pleasure of meeting either of your parents, but they certainly did a beautiful job of raising a thoughtful, caring and compassionate daughter.
    As I look at your mother’s photo I realize that, without her glasses, she and my mother are uncanny look-alikes…maybe twins separated at birth, and you and I might be cousins???
    I guess any levity is inappropriate at this time.
