Henry H Dickinson

July 4, 1934     ~     June 1, 2010

Judge Henry Holman Dickinson of Glasgow, Kentucky, passed away June 1, 2010, at his home. Born July 4, 1934, he was the son of the late Gwendolyn and Brents Dickinson Jr.

Judge Dickinson is survived by his wife of 51 years, Emmy Lou Miller Dickinson; three children, Laura Day Dickinson DelCotto (Mark) of Lexington, Kentucky, Thomas Miller Dickinson (Denise) of Glasgow, Kentucky, and Amy Holman Dickinson Lecky (John) of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren, Matthew, Ellen, and Ryan DelCotto; Emma Kate and Stuart Dickinson; and Henry and Finley Lecky; brother, Brents Dickinson III (Billie) of Bowling Green, Kentucky, sister, Lelia Ann Dickinson Smith (Grant) of Cheney, Washington; sister-in-law, Jo Brent Robertson (Bill), of Lexington, Kentucky; one aunt, Anna Holman of Becton, Kentucky; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Judge Dickinson was a member of the First Christian Church of Glasgow, where he served as a deacon, elder, and trustee and taught the Combs-Dickinson Sunday School Class for 16 years.

Judge Dickinson was a graduate of Glasgow High School, Centre College, and the University of Kentucky College of Law.

He began his legal career in 1958 by clerking for the late Judge Morris Montgomery of the Kentucky Court of Appeals. He returned to Glasgow in 1959 and joined the law firm of Richardson, Barrickman, and Dickinson, where he became a partner. During his 40 years in the practice of law, Judge Dickinson was elected to the position of City Prosecutor, which he held from 1962 to 1970. In 1971, he was appointed Glasgow City Attorney and held that position until 1986. In 1986, Judge Dickinson went into private law practice. However, his private practice was short lived; as in 1987, he was appointed United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Kentucky. He served as a Federal Judge until 1999, when he retired.

Judge Dickinson served in the United States Army Reserve for 13 years and was an active member of numerous civic and legal organizations.

He will be remembered for his outgoing and generous spirit.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. CDT, Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the First Christian Church in Glasgow. Burial will follow in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be at Hatcher and Saddler Funeral Home on Friday, June 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CDT and on Saturday after 9:30 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund, 1100 North Race Street, Glasgow, Kentucky 42141.

Dear Emmy Lou, Laura Day, Miller, and Amy,
There is a great void in the town of Glasgow-without Henry. If I could ever have wished for a surrogate Dad, it would have been Henry. Through his prestige, he was so humble and gentle in spirit. I have many fond memories of Henry, especially from our high school band. Remember we drove on the sidewalks in a cab with him in NYC! We had many a great time with Henry. I SO appreciated you coming to my dads viewing 6 months ago, when he passed away. I am thankful that I had an opportunity to speak to Henry, and tell him what an impact he had on my life. Thank you God for sharing Henry Dickinson with all of us. May he rest in peace in your arms. Alison Ellis Weaver
