Mary Florence Hayes Whiteside, 95, died Tuesday, August 05, 2008, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow after a short illness.  Mrs. Whiteside was born January 27, 1913 in Monroe County near the community of Gamaliel.  The wife of the late Dr. George P. Whiteside, and the daughter of the late Vanus and Edna Harlin Hayes, Mrs. Whiteside was a graduate of David Lipscomb High School in Nashville, TN, where she was valedictorian of her graduating class and a member of the ladies basketball team.  After graduating from Western Kentucky University, she taught school in both Monroe County and Glasgow.  A longtime resident of Glasgow, Mrs. Whiteside was active in the community, a long-time member of the Glasgow Garden Club, the National Council of Judges, and a member of the South Green Street Church of Christ.

Mrs. Whiteside is survived by her three children: Drs. Philip (Cookie) and Jim (Mary) Whiteside of Glasgow, and daughter Ann (Bob) Dickson of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Jane Ann Dempsey, Asheville, NC; Julie Hires, Atlanta, GA; Dr. Will Whiteside, Glasgow; Adam Whiteside, Louisville; John Whiteside, Bowling Green; Andrew and George Whiteside, Glasgow; and Ann Robert Dickson, Lexington, KY; four great-grandchildren, Edward and Mary Bea Hires, Harlan Dempsey, and Kilbourne Whiteside.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2008, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.  Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Glasgow Independent School Foundation, P.O. Box 1239, Glasgow, KY 42142-1239.
