            Christine Plumlee Ford Mathis, 94, Glasgow, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at the Glenview Health Care Center.  A native of the Elbow Springs Community of Barren County, she was the daughter of the late Col. William Joseph Ford and Mary Chowning Jones Ford.

            Christine was a graduate of Glasgow High School and Western Kentucky University.  She was a retired teacher with 50 years of service.  She taught in the Glasgow, Barren County, Shelbyville, Shelby County and Henry County Schools Systems.  She became a member of the First Christian Church in Glasgow in 1921.  Her membership continued until her move to Shelbyville in 1940, where she was a member of the First Christian Church until her return to Glasgow in 1983.  She served in many capacities with the church, including Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and CWF leader.

            Christine was active in many civic organizations.  She was a member of all local, state and national education associations; a member of the Kentucky Easter Seals Society; a member of the Red Cross Society; a member of the Western Kentucky University Alumni Association; was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel for her service to education by Gov. Julian Carroll; a member of the Shelby County Community Theatre; and a member of the Kentucky Historical Society.  She donated four mantles to the Mary Todd Lincoln House during its restoration by Beula Nunn.  She also help found the Museum of the Barrens, where she served five years as clerk in the thrift shop.

            Survivors include two sons, Fred H. Mathis, Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Frankfort, and Benjamin Ford Mathis and his wife, Cynthia, of Independence, KY; four grandchildren, Kelly Ford Mathis, Elizabeth Marie Mathis Adkins, Kathryn Rose Mathis Frederick and Matthew Ford Mathis; two step-grandchildren, Mrs. Kim Harden and Doug Ellegood Mathis; six great-grandchildren.

            In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred H. Mathis, Sr.; two brothers, Edgar Lee Ford and Paul Howard Ford.

            Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2005, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Hiseville Cemetery.  Visitation will begin after 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, Christine requested that contributions be made to the First Christian Church, 1100 North Race Street, Glasgow, KY 42141.
