He served over three (3) years in the United States Coast Guard as a First Mechanic aboard ship. After discharge, Wilmer returned to his hometown and began a career in law enforcement. He worked as an officer for the City of Gloomer, Chippewa County, and the State of Wisconsin for close to thirty (30) years. Upon retirement, Wilmer moved to Vero Beach, FL, where he worked as a beekeeper and in security at Piper Airplane Manufacturer for another twenty (20) years.
