William H. “Bill” Simmons, 97, formerly of Glasgow, died Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at his residence in Elizabethtown. A native of Warren County, he was the son of the late Claude Josephus Simmons and Audney Ragland Simmons.

Immediately following graduation from high school, Bill joined the United States Navy with whom he served in the South Pacific during WWII. After his military service, he continued his education at Western Kentucky University and became an educator. He first taught in Spartansburg, SC at the school for the deaf and blind after which he moved back to Kentucky and taught at Caverna High School and later Glasgow High School. He taught industrial arts and drafting for more than 30 years. He had a great interest in woodworking and muzzle loading rifles (several of which he made). He was a long time member of the First Christian Church where he also served as deacon and was a dedicated member of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Anna Burris Simmons; three children: Patty Owen and husband Sid of Hardinsburg, Jean Power and husband Ben of Georgetown, SC, and Don Simmons and wife Susan of Elizabethtown; four grandchildren: Andrew Owen and wife Desireé, Jenni Jean Owen, Billy Simmons, and Matt Simmons; two great-grandchildren: Natasha Owen and Wyatt Owen; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother C J Simmons and one sister Mary Lillian Spencer.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or the First Christian Church.

Face coverings or masks are optional. Arrangements entrusted to Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.
