Tressie Elmore Young

Tressie Elmore Young, 86, of Glasgow, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at her home in Rocky Hill.

Tressie was born September 17, 1939, in Glasgow, Kentucky, to the late James Turner Elmore and Daisy Mae Mills Elmore. She was a longtime member of Hanging Fork Baptist Church. Tressie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and to her family she was simply “Nannie.” Her greatest joy was her big family, and there was always room for one more around her table.

Nannie had a special way of taking care of the people she loved, and often that love was shown through her kitchen. No one ever had to wonder if they would be fed at Nannie’s. She could whip up a meal in no time, and somehow, anything she made was delicious. She especially loved baking pies, and no family gathering was complete without Nannie’s famous chocolate pies.

She also loved tending to her rose garden, taking great pride in the beautiful blooms she nurtured around her home. Her roses, much like her kitchen, were another reflection of the care she put into the things and people she loved.

More than anything, Tressie loved her family. She was blessed with a large one, and she treasured the gatherings, conversations, laughter, meals, and everyday moments that came along with it. Her home was a place where family was always welcomed and loved.

Tressie is survived by her husband, John Alvin Young; her four children, Terri Spillman, James Earl Wilkinson (Jackie), Vickie Wilkinson, and Eddie Wilkinson; two stepchildren, Terri Lyn Adams (Roy) and Terrelton Young; a chosen sister, Jean Wilkinson; 14 grandchildren and their spouses; and an abundance of great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Larry Elmore, Leslie Elmore, and Charles Davis; a sister, Jewell Estes; and her stepson, John Vernon Young.

Those who loved Tressie will remember the roses she tended, the pies she baked, the wonderful meals she made, and the way she loved having her family close. Her kitchen may be quieter, but the love she poured into her family will remain in the recipes they make, the stories they tell, the traditions they carry on, and every gathering where her memory is present.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home, with the family gathering at 9:00 am. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 pm, with burial to follow at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.
