Mary Lou Copeland Travis, 78, of Glasgow, died at her home on Sunday, September 21, 2014.
Born September 6, 1936 in Stone, KY, Mary Lou attended Belfry High School, where she was active in school as an accompanist for and a member of the Glee Club. She was also an accompanist for the choir of the Stone Methodist Church. She was class queen her senior year. She was a registered nurse, having obtained her training at Good Samaritan Hospital and the University of Kentucky. For many years she worked at T.J. Samson Community Hospital, the later part of that time in the emergency room. It was while attending UK she met Joe Lane Travis. They were married on June 9, 1956 at the Epworth Methodist Church in Lexington.
Mary Lou enjoyed gathering with friends to play bridge and loved music, especially the piano.
She was the daughter of the late James Alfred Copeland and Sarah Spears Collins Burchell Copeland. She is survived by her husband, Joe Lane Travis, one son, Thomas (Lisa) Travis of Lexington, KY and four daughters; Mary Jo (Jeff) Corbin, Diana Kay (Craig) Compton of Seattle, WA; Amy Elizabeth (Todd) Carter and Holly Lane Travis. Five grandchildren: Tom and Lauren Travis, Diana Hogg and Tanner and Landry Carter. A brother, Delmas Copeland of Waynesville, NC and sister, Eloise Houston of Cincinnati, OH, also survive.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James Edwards Collins and Estil Lee Burchell and two sisters, Celestrial Collins Titus and Ruth Evelyn Collins.
Funeral services will be 11 am Thursday at Hatcher and Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will began after 5 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.
