James Nathan Garrett

James Nathan Garrett, 70, of Glasgow, KY, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2025. He was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, April 1,1955, to the late James Murison Garrett and Carrie Helen Lester of Beaumont, Kentucky. . At the age of 19, James served a 2 year Spanish-speaking mission in Guatemala/El Salvador,for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which was a highlight of his life. He then continued his schooling at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT, where he met his future wife, Freida Garrett, in a dance class. They married 23 June, 1978. James completed his Masters in Accounting in April 1981, which began his career for many large corporations as a CPA. His work took him to many states and countries, including Arizona, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Washington, Samoa, Germany, London, Nicaragua, and most latin American countries. James loved to learn about new places and cultures, and documentaries were some of his favorite things to watch.

James started playing drums as a youth with his childhood guitarist friend Tim Messersmith of Indianapolis, and others, and continued playing them as a hobby into his retirement years with a few local bands. He also had the special enjoyment of teaching some of his grandsons drum lessons. He loved a variety of music, including Led Zeppelin, John Fogarty, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Beach Boys, and the Beatles. His favorite song was “Long as I Can See the Light”, by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

James and Freida moved back to his roots in the Glasgow,Kentucky area in May 2024, and were very much looking forward to spending his remaining years with his beloved cousins whom he had spent many of his childhood summers with. He found much gratification in documenting the family history of all his ancestors who lived and died in the Kentucky area. He is survived by his wife Freida, five beautiful children, Reece Alan Garrett (Shana) of Pawcatuck, CT, Devin DeLane Garrett, of Provo UT, Aaron Bryce Garrett(Pauline) of San Jose, CA, Megan Garrett Anderton (Matt) of Highlands Ranch, CO, Kiersten Anne Garrett Militoni(Siosiua) of Lehi, UT, and 13 grandchildren, Nathan, Rebecca, Danielle, Olivia, Emmalee, Siosiua, Siosifa, Semisi, Cecily, Elijah, Oliver, Charlotte, and Violet. He is also survived by 1 sister, Patricia Diane Neal of Provo, UT, and a niece, Tracy Lynn Larsen(Scott) of Blanding, UT, 2 remaining aunts, Juanita Tooley, and Hazel McFarland, of Glasgow, KY, and a multitude of cousins, on both the Garrett and Lester sides of the family, His heart and country spirit home at last, James will be interred in the Summer Shade, Kentucky Cemetery amongst his many relatives and parents.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 30th at 1pm at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home in Glasgow, Ky Visitation will be 11 -1pm until services begin, after which the family will gather together to visit and eat James’ favorite southern foods at the LDS church located at 748 W. Cherry St., Glasgow, KY
