Hugh A. Bell, 88, of Glasgow, died Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital. He was the son of the late John Evans Bell and Margaret Suerilda Eastham Bell. He was a retired salesman for Sherwin Williams. A U.S. Navy Veteran, he sailed aboard the USS Trinity, an oil tanker, and aboard the USS Gambier Bay, an aircraft carrier, during his military career. He fought in five major battles and received several medals, including the African-European Medal, American Area Medal, American Defense Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. His highest rank was Quartermaster 1st Class. He was a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife: Virginia Lee Bell; six children: David Bell, Mark Bell, Peggy Billips, Mary Hurtgen, Donna Gordon and Terry Bydlik; twenty-three grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Dennis Bell and Avery Bell; two sisters: Charlene Langston and Sylvia Cross.
Funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with entombment at the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens, with Chapter 20 DAV providing military honors.
