Capt. (Ret.) Harold Walker Ward, Jr., MD, MPH

On October 20, 2008 we lost our brother and friend.  Always Harold, Jr. to some, Ace to a few, Hal to many, Uncle Harold to four, and Dr. Ward to his long time nurse, Sue Paul, he fought hard to live and die with dignity.

Born January 18, 1944 in Kentucky, Harold, Jr., always thought of it as home.  He loved the Strader Family, the farm, and his Model A.  Summer was his time to be free and he was always grateful to his Aunts and Uncles for making his visits possible.  He was proud to be called a Kentucky Colonel.

After graduating from Lehigh University in 1966 and Harvard School of Public Health and Cornell Medical School in June 1970, Hal completed his Residency in Psychiatry at Boston Massachusetts General.    The young Dr. Ward then entered the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, California.  His work included stress management for the Navy Seals, Alzheimer’s studies for the University of California – San Diego School of Medicine, and personality traits required for Mars exploration for the US Government.  He retired as a Captain in the US Naval Reserves and was medically retired from UCSD.

He adopted California, purchased his home on Point Loma, and embraced fishing, diving and boating until Multiple Sclerosis made these joys impossible.  The disease took his body but not his soul.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Frances Strader Ward of Glasgow, KY.  He is survived by his brother, Dr. Charles Ward, his sister-in-law, Kathy Ward, and his niece Sarah Ward of Norfolk, VA, his niece Tara Ward of Birmingham, AL, his sister, Sarah Kulungowski and brother-in-law, Bobby Doggett of Harlingen, TX, his niece, Ann Kulungowski of Boston, MA, his nephew, Alexander Kulungowski and his nurse of 16 years, Sue Paul, of San Diego, CA.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 25, 2008, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Saturday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery, c/o Glasgow Garden Club, 210 Wedgewood Drive, Glasgow, KY 42141.
