Mary Edna Bishop, affectionately known by many as “Granny”, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at NHC Healthcare in Glasgow. She was 79. Born in Almagordo, NM, she was the daughter of the late John and Olive Jones Stephens.

Mary Edna was well known for her many years of public service. She was employed at the Barren County ASCS office from 1956 until 1994. She then was later employed at the Barren County Sheriff’s Office for approximately 10 years. She had been an active member of the Scottie Band Parents and the Democratic Women’s Club. She was a long time member of the Faith United Methodist Church where she had also served many years as Treasurer.

Survivors include one daughter: Sharon Bishop Gilson and her husband Dr. Ian Scott Gilson; two granddaughters: Katie Gilson Shepard and husband Van, and Dr. Emily Gilson Knight and husband Tyler; one grandson: Ian N. Gilson; two great-granddaughters: Mary Emerson Shepard and Hadley Lynn Knight all of Glasgow; one brother: Johnny Lee Stephens of New Mexico.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert N. Bishop, Sr. and her son Robert N. “Bobby” Bishop, Jr.

A celebration of Mary Edna’s life will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with inurnment at Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be after 11:00 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

    I would like to offer my condolence for the loss of your mother. As you know she was a special lady, I will never forget the laughs and good times we had at the Sheriff’s Office. I had a chance to stop and see her the other day, she knew me and visit was good. I say again she was a very special lady that touched my heart and I’m so thankful she was my friend.
