Martha J. Matthews Terry, 76, died Friday, April 28, 2017 at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.  She was the daughter of the late James A. and Dorothy Alexander Matthews.

She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Glasgow where she served in numerous capacities including service as an Elder.  More recently, she had been a faithful volunteer at the Community Soup Kitchen.

A graduate of Hiseville High School, she earned a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree, and Rank I from Western Kentucky University.  A dedicated educator, she taught 30 years at Caverna Elementary School until retiring in 1995.   In addition to teaching in the classroom, Martha served the education profession as president of the Caverna Education Association, the Third District Education Association, and was a delegate to the National Education Association.  She was a knowledgeable and vocal advocate of fair and equitable benefits and retirement plans for public school teachers across the state.  She was honored with the Educator of Excellence Award by the Caverna Jaycees.  Extending her passion for young people beyond the classroom, she was a long-time 4-H leader.  After retirement, she owned and operated Goodnight Inn where she served both memorable food and hospitality for 13 years.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, W.S. “Bumpy” Terry, III and her only child, W. Samuel Terry, IV.   She is also survived by a brother, James A. Matthews, III of Mount Washington; two sisters, Pitsy Matthews Buren and Mary Belle Matthews Newby, both of Louisville; five nieces and three nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Martha Matthews Terry will be Monday, May 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hatcher and Saddler Funeral Home in Glasgow.  Visitation will continue Tuesday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at First Christian Church of Glasgow with funeral services at 11 a.m.  A family graveside service will be held later that day at Horse Cave Cemetery.  Alternate expressions of sympathy are suggested to the First Christian Church of Glasgow.

    Sam and family so sorry for your loss. Her obituary is a great tribute to her as she was a woman of statue and her accomplishments but her greatest was having you as a son. She was so proud as I never saw her without giving me an update on your activities. I know she will be missed. You are in my thoughts and prayers.     I’m so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Terry was my daughter’s 1st grade teacher and Ashley loved her so much. She was not able to come to the viewing or funeral because she lives in Louisville and her work schedule but she sent flowers and the family will be in our prayers.
