Hugh A. Bell, 88, of Glasgow, died Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital. He was the son of the late John Evans Bell and Margaret Suerilda Eastham Bell. He was a retired salesman for Sherwin Williams. A U.S. Navy Veteran, he sailed aboard the USS Trinity, an oil tanker, and aboard the USS Gambier Bay, an aircraft carrier, during his military career. He fought in five major battles and received several medals, including the African-European Medal, American Area Medal, American Defense Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. His highest rank was Quartermaster 1st Class. He was a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife: Virginia Lee Bell; six children: David Bell, Mark Bell, Peggy Billips, Mary Hurtgen, Donna Gordon and Terry Bydlik; twenty-three grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Dennis Bell and Avery Bell; two sisters: Charlene Langston and Sylvia Cross.

Funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with entombment at the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens, with Chapter 20 DAV providing military honors. Visitation will be after noon on Sunday until time for services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Commonwealth Health Foundation “The Hospitality House” P. O.     I just got word that Hugh had passed on Thursday. I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Hugh was such a great man. Bobby still talks about the humongous deck that he and Hugh built. Love you.

    Ginny: I was so sorry to hear of the death of Mr.Bell. He was a wonderful person and a joy to be around. I still remember mom saying to him “Oh, you belong to Mrs. Bell ” his response being “No she belongs to me” My prayers are with you and your family as you go through this difficult time in your life.

    jenny, you are in my prayers,when i think of hugh i think of the parking ticket you and hugh put on my car so i could park in your drive way when mons was so full also of the fun mom had makeing him a cardboard birthday cake,you hugh and your mom was so good to her she really missed you all when you moved and not to forget your little red sled that i treasure. you were so lucky to have hugh in your life for so long you well miss him but just think he is not hurting now , ,
