Major Rondel R. “Soup” Oliver, U.S. Army National Guard, Ret., 86, Glasgow, died Sunday, August 8, 2010, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. A native of Barren County, he was a son of the late Rondel R. Oliver, Sr. and Nettie Jewell Oliver. Maj. Oliver was a veteran of both WW II and the Korean Conflict, and was a former Commander of the 623rd Field Artillery in Glasgow. Following his military retirement, he worked with Lindsey General Tire Co., L.L. Morris Oil Well Supply Co., and Page Brothers Oil Well Supply. He also worked with a number of area churches and was active in various civic organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Wiley Pulliam Oliver; one son, Charles Robert Oliver and his wife, Kelly, of Glasgow; one daughter, Pamela Jo Depp and her husband, William, of Mt. Juliet, TN.; four grandchildren, Jonathan Depp and his wife, Amanda, Owen Taylor Griffith, Lauren Scout Oliver and Robert Todd Oliver; two sisters, Sue Travis and her husband, Freddie, of Glasgow, and Betty Weaver of Horse Cave; one brothers, Dr. William J. Oliver and his wife, Jeannie, of Louisville; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Rondel David Oliver and one brother-in-law, B. H. Weaver.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the 623rd Field Artillery Honor Guard. Friends may call after 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

    I was 10 years old when Soup was in Korea I remember him sending propaganda leaflets that were dropped to the North Koreans . Soup and my dad “Obie ” Obenchain worked together at Norris – Madison Oil Field Supply Co. at that time

    What a great guy, I am very sorry to hear of his passing. He was a benchmark with everyone he came into contact. He helped numerous friends through great difficulty. He was a leader throughout his military career; we should all strive to walk in his shoes.
