Philip Byrd “Phil” Wells, Sr., 86, a resident of Highland Ridge, Glasgow, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital.  He was a son of the late Annie Rogers and L. L. Wells, Sr. and husband of the late Anne Hackney Wells, with whom he shared 51+ years of marriage.

Mr. Wells was a retired insurance executive and tobacco warehouseman.  He shared many interests, but was an avid boatman, mostly at Barren River Lake.  After attending Western Kentucky State College, he served with the United States Coast Guard during WW II.  At the conclusion of the war, he returned to Barren County and pursued his career.  He was co-owner of Glen Eyre Farm with his brother, William; co-owner of Wells Tobacco Warehouse with his brother, Rogers; and co-owner of Wells-Grinstead Insurance with Chris T. Grinstead.  He also served in many leadership positions through the years.  He was President of the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce in 1959; a Past President of the Glasgow Golf & Country Club; a Past President of the Burley Auction Warehouse Association; retired President of the Planter’s Insurance Association; and a member of the Glasgow Rotary Club.  He was a former member of the First Christian Church and for the past several years had been active in the St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

Survivors include three children, Jeanne Travis and husband, Joe, of Somerset, Barbara Kramer and husband, Jack, of Louisville, and Phil Wells, Jr. and wife, Connie, of Glasgow; seven grandchildren, Marc Travis and wife, Amy, and Jason Travis and wife, Amber, and their son, Zachary, all of Somerset, Emily Travis of Charlotte, NC, Mary Lauren Wells of Savannah, GA, Wes Shipley and wife, Chasity, Matt Shipley and Alexandra Wells all of Glasgow; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, Laura Travis; three brothers, L. Rogers Wells, Sr., L. L. “Luke” Wells, Jr., and Dr. William C. Wells; two sisters, Louise Wells Richardson and Virginia Wells Davis.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.  Friends may call after 5:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
