Barbara Overington Bale, daughter of S. Garnett & Joy Field Bale, was born April 10, 1939, and departed this life September 18, 2007.  She attended Christian College in Stephens, MO, before graduating from Western Kentucky University with a degree in Education.  She began teaching first grade in the Fayette County school system in 1961, and in 1973 she accepted a teaching position at The Lexington School.  During a career that spanned 37 years, she introduced first-graders to the lifelong magic and mystery of learning.  Through the art of listening, she learned from them as well as they from her.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her sister Daryl Bale Vann (Mrs. E.P.) and brothers Shelby G. Bale and Phillip W. Bale (& wife Kristen), all of Glasgow; Richard H. Bale (& wife Gina) of Spokane, WA; Bradley F. Bale (& wife Pam) of Lubbock, TX; and sister-in-law Robin Bale of Seattle, WA.  Also surviving are 15 nieces and nephews; 10 great-nieces and nephews; a multitude of friends; and a large family of dearly loved former students.

There will be a memorial graveside service 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 22, 2007, at the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.  The family requests that expressions of celebration for Barbara’s life be given to The Lexington School, 1050 Lane Allen Road, Lexington, KY 40504.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.
