Ernest Leech Myers, Jr., son of the late Ernest Leech Myers, Sr. and Hattie Lee
Jewell Myers, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2002. Born on February 1, 1914 in the home of his great uncle, Dr.
Joseph Leech on West Brown Street, now the home of Brice T. “Pete” Leech, he
represented the fifth generation of pioneer Barren County settlers.
He was known affectionately as “Shorty”, a nickname given him by his
uncle Preston “Tubby” Jewell.
Having played on the Glasgow High School State Champion Football team of
1928, he graduated from Glasgow High School in the class of 1932.
His further education included studies at Western Kentucky State College.
He later joined the family business, The Old Planing Mill, where he
served as vice president. His career in the field of lumber spanned a lifetime.
He was a member of the Kentucky Retail Lumber Dealers Association.
A lifelong member of Glasgow Baptist Church, he enjoyed his sevice in the
sanctuary choir and member ship in the Keystone Sunday School Class.
“Shorty” followed and supported as a Scottie Booster the sports
programs of Glasgow High School as long as possible and was twice named “#1
Fan” by the Glasgow Scotties Football program.
An avid sportsman, “Shorty” especially enjoyed dove hunting and
fishing at Barren River Reservoir with his buddies.
Mr. Myers served as a director of the New Farmers National Bank.
Prior to World War II, he served in the 123rd Cavalry Kentucky
National Guard.
As a longtime member of the Glasgow Rotary Club he was named a Paul
Harris Fellow.
He was a member of Allen Lodge #24 F. & A.M. and a Shriner for over
sixty years. As
a member of TPA he received recognition for over 56 years of membership.
His
family and good family times together brought him much pleasure.
His marriage, June 19, 1937 to Olive Ethel Whitlow of Old Eighty Eight,
KY, was held at high noon at Glasgow Baptist Church.
Their two children, Mary Leech (Leechie) Myers McDonald, husband Johnny
D. McDonald, of Forest City, NC and Ernest Leech (Ernie) Myers, III and wife
Bambie Lynn Trautman of Glasgow, KY survive as do their four grandchildren, Mary
Myers McDonald of Greensboro, NC, John Glenn McDonald of Raleigh, NC, Lynn
Courtney Myers and Ernest Leech Myers, IV of Glasgow, KY.
A nephew and three nieces survive, William Ernest (Bill) Myers of
Glasgow, KY, and Charlotte Jean Rogers, Martha Sue Rogers Gilmartin and Rebecca
Lee Rogers Lee of Georgia.
Mr.
Myers was predeceased by his wife, Ethel Whitlow Myers, after fifty-eight years
of marriage, a sister, Mary Charlotte Myers Rogers (John Lewis), and a brother,
Elbert Jewell Myers (Ruth Lyon).
