Dr. James Jesup Crouch, Jr. was born
March 31, 1921
in Elkton, Todd County, Kentucky, the son of James Jesup and Margaret (Hollins)
Crouch. In 1938 he entered Western Kentucky State College (now
Western
Kentucky
University
) in
Bowling Green
,
Kentucky
for pre-veterinary studies. In 1941 he enrolled at the Ohio State
University College of Veterinary Medicine. He
served in the Army Specialized Training Program of the Veterinary Corps.
Elsie Schneiter and James Crouch were married in 1944. After
graduation from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, he
interned at LaCenter, Kentucky under Dr. W. M. Coffee.
In 1945 Elsie and Jim moved to
Glasgow
,
Kentucky
where he founded the Animal Clinic
on
West Main Street
. He helped organize the South
Central Rural Telephone Cooperative and served a four year term as its first
president. He served as president of
the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association in 1966 and was named Kentucky
Veterinarian of the Year in 1974. Jim Crouch served as an elder and trustee of
the Glasgow First Christian
Church. While at the Animal Clinic of Glasgow his partners included Doctors
Nelson A. Pott, Edwin A. Page, Bobby A. Guilfoil and Steve Webb. In 1995 he
retired from veterinary practice. In 1998 he founded By-products for Cattle and
traveled across
Kentucky
and
Tennessee
helping cattle farmers increase productivity with a cost-effective nutritional
supplement for beef and dairy cows. On the afternoon of September 1, 2004,
while on one of these trips, he fell asleep while driving on Interstate-65 south
of Elizabethtown, Kentucky and died a few hours later from chest injuries
sustained in the single vehicle accident. He lived 83 good years.
He will be missed by family and friends.
He leaves
behind his wife of 60 years Elsie Crouch, a daughter Mary Louise Sawyer and her
husband James Sawyer of Albemarle, North Carolina; four sons: John Crouch and
his wife Kay of Louisville, Kentucky; Dr. Richard Crouch and his wife Cheryl of
Murray, Kentucky; Tom Crouch and his wife Dianne of Lexington, Kentucky; Joe
Crouch and his wife Kathy of Lexington, Kentucky; nine grand-children: Ginger
Spickler and her husband Joshua of Memphis, Tennessee, Stephen Crouch and his
wife Kim, James C. Crouch and Elizabeth Crouch, all of Louisville, Martha Crouch
and Susannah Crouch of Lexington, John Sawyer of Charlotte, North Carolina,
Christopher Sawyer of Albemarle, North Carolina, David Crouch of Murray,
Kentucky; two brothers: Billie
T. Crouch and his wife Nancy of Elkton, Kentucky and David Crouch and his wife
Georgia of Elkton, Kentucky and one sister Virginia McKee of Franklin, Tennessee
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from
4PM
to
8PM
on Saturday, September 11 at Hatcher & Sadler Funeral Home, Glasgow, and
from
1PM
to
2PM
, Sunday, September 12 at the First Christian Church, Glasgow, followed by a
memorial service at
2PM
at the church. Burial will be at
Glenwood
Cemetery
in
Elkton
,
Kentucky
. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Building Fund of the
First Christian Church,
Glasgow
,
Kentucky
or to the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library, Glasgow.
